Description:

Overview:

This Student Showcase features three presentations from Safe States’ student members – Michele Schombs, Julie Kafka, and Dawn Porter.

Michele Schombs, BSN, RN, CEN, NYSAFE, is currently enrolled in SUNY Delhi Nursing Master’s Program, with a focus on education. Michele’s presentation will be on a trauma informed care project at New York Presbyterian Queens, an urban trauma center within a highly diverse population. The research project uses Forum Theater where the communication between providers and patients will be assessed and evaluated on its impact of perceived discrimination. The findings will prove beneficial to support evidence that shows a link between poor quality communication with ethnic and racial minorities to disparities in outcomes.

Julie M. Kafka, MPH, is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Health Behavior at the Gillings School of Global Public Health at University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Julie’s presentation will focus on a machine learning algorithm that documents the connection between intimate partner violence and suicide outcomes. There are no national data that document the connection between intimate partner violence (IPV) and suicide, particularly in single suicide events. Kafka’s dissertation uses Natural Language Processing (NLP) and supervised machine learning to assess which suicides were precipitated by IPV in the National Violent Death Reporting System. She’ll share information about her NLP pipeline and some early results from the project.

Dawn M. Porter, MS, CHES is the Intentional Injury Prevention Specialist at Arkansas Children’s Hospital. She is currently working on her PhD in Leadership Equity and Inclusion at the University of Central Arkansas. Dawn’s presentation will be on The Zero Suicide Initiative, a system wide organizational commitment to suicide care in health and behavioral health care systems, and how it is being implemented into a Children’s Hospital setting.
